Fort Hawkins
Considered the “Pentagon of the South” in the War of 1812, Fort Hawkins was established in 1806 by President Thomas Jefferson for positive Native American relations as a U.S. Army Fort & Trading Factory. Out of that frontier fort in 1823, Macon, Georgia, was founded and laid out across the Ocmulgee River. Today the historic Fort is a national treasure for early American history as archaeological work continues. The current 1938 blockhouse, a replica on the site of the original, is open for tours weekends and during special events, including annual Frontier Fort Christmas, Memorial Day Ceremony, 4th of July Celebration, Veterans Day program and Halloween Hauntings.
