    Macon Symphony Orchestra

Since it was founded in 1976, this cultural treasure has been at the forefront of American orchestras in its commitment to American music and artists, touching the lives of thousands through its variety of live subscription, pops, family, young peoples’ and tour concerts. Of exceptional note are performances on Georgia Public Radio and educational enrichment such as its annual Concerto Competition, Artists in the Classroom Project, String Development Scholarships and the Mercer/Macon Symphony Youth Orchestra in collaboration with Mercer University. Benefit and special concerts over the years have included Tony Bennett, Ray Charles and two Macon natives, violin virtuoso Robert McDuffie and baritone Allan Evans.

In March 2012, The Macon Symphony Orchestra and Mercer University announced the appointment of Ward Stare as Music Director and Conductor of the MSO and Distinguished Artist and Conductor of the Mercer University Orchestra.  Formerly the Resident Conductor of the Saint Louis Symphony, he has been described as “a compelling figure on the podium” and “one of the hottest young conductors in America” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  Maestro Stare made his highly successful Carnegie Hall debut with the STL orchestra in 2009, stepping in to conduct a performance praised by the New York Times as a “terrific concert.”  Their praise further noted that “Mr. Stare inspired the musicians to impressive heights," and the Macon Symphony Orchestra looks forward to newly inspired seasons with him as well.
