Riverside Cemetery
From the original 1887 gatehouse, a rare and unique example of Old English half-timbered construction, to the remains of Civil War earthworks overlooking the Ocmulgee River, this cemetery is full of interesting history. Designed in 1887 by Calvert Vaux, of New York’s Central Park and Atlanta’s Piedmont Park fame, Riverside is often called an underground museum due to the history and stories of the nearly 17,000 people interred there, including Confederate and Federal Civil War veterans, civic, business and religious leaders and prominent Macon families. Annual events held here include the popular Spirits in October tours and ceremonies marking military days of honor.
