Sidney Lanier Cottage
Macon’s first musician of national significance was born in this c1840 Victorian style cottage while his parents were visiting his grandparents in 1842. A self-taught musician, Sidney Clopton Lanier held the position of First Flute for the Peabody Symphony Orchestra in Baltimore for seven seasons, but is primarily remembered for his moving poetry, most of which was published posthumously by his widow. He also was a brilliant lawyer, linguist, mathematician and soldier of the Confederate Army. The cottage houses many of Lanier’s belongings including a silver alto flute, his bride’s tiny wedding dress of 1867, portraits of him and his wife, and several first editions of his works.
