Heart of Georgia Dragon Boat Races
Sure, you conjure images of oriental cherry blossoms when thinking about Macon, Georgia, but you may not associate the ancient Chinese tradition of dragon boat racing with the city. That is, until Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Central Georgia started a new tradition, with a unique annual fundraiser to support the good work they do in this community. Every June, teams of 22-25 people solicit sponsor pledges before plunging into Lake Tobesofkee in a spectacular show of camaraderie, strength and endurance. Although dragon boat racing began some 2,400 years ago in China, it is now a cross-cultural sport with events throughout the world, making it the fastest growing team water sport in more than 60 countries.
