Expanding the Course Catalog

Since the 1980s, Mercer University has kept pace with a booming student enrollment by adding eight colleges, including the schools of medicine, business, engineering, theology, education, nursing, and, most recently, a school of music. The Walter F. George School of Law, with its panoramic view of downtown, is the oldest law school in the Southeast.

For a Healthier Georgia

Mercer’s School of Medicine was established in 1982 to educate Georgia residents to meet the state’s growing health care needs, particularly in rural and medically underserved areas. It is consistently recognized for its focus on family medicine, and in 2005, U.S. News & World Report ranked the school 17th out of 126 accredited medical schools in the family medicine category. The university also offers master's programs in public health and family therapy.

Distinguished Alumni

Mercer has produced a long line of leaders in every field, including Georgia’s current governor, Nathan Deal; the state’s poet laureate, David Bottoms; celebrity prosecutor Nancy Grace; and numerous newspaper publishers. Other notable alumni include former U.S. Attorney General Griffin Bell; Publisher and National Geographic Society President Reg Murphy; philosopher Andrew Light; and Cathy Cox, the first woman elected as Georgia’s Secretary of State.

One for the Books

To get a sense of campus spirit, check out the lyrical prose of Ferrol Sams, the physician-turned-author noted for Run with the Horsemen and Whisper of the River, classics of Southern literature inspired, in part, by his youthful days at Mercer. The university also boasts one of the most prominent and respected university presses in the country.

Music in the Air

The Townshend School of Music was established in 2006, with the state-of-the-art McCorkle Music Center and ensembles for jazz and wind instruments. It is home to the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings, named for the Macon-born violin virtuoso. Students study with internationally renowned string musicians, receiving music instruction of conservatory quality, while earning an academically well-rounded education.
