Top 5 Places for Great Sushi
The term sushi comes from an archaic grammatical form no longer used in other contexts, and literally means "sour-tasting", a reflection of its historic origin as a fermented food. The oldest form of sushi in Japan, narezushi, is still made by wrapping fish in soured fermenting rice, which causes the fish proteins to break down into their constituent amino acids. Sushi is like a wine, you have your favorites and they might not resemble your friends favorites. We can love our friends, but we don't always have to agree. After a bunch of name calling and hair pulling we finally narrowed down our list to the Top 5.
1. mikata-japanese steak house and sushi bar
Mikata's definitely knows the art of sushi and is a longtime favorite among many Maconites. Mikata's cemented it's status as an iconic Macon Restaurant first as the go to hibachi destination for family gatherings. Shortly thereafter their sushi gained notoriety as well, the sushi often resembles big delicious pinwheels and comes in more variations than we've had time to try. We love the Loveboat platter, perfect for a romantic date-- sushi elegantly displayed on an actual miniature wooden boat. How cute!
Much like Mikata, Taki is a hibachi restaurant that also serves sushi. We are fans of eating in the dining room away from flaming grills and enjoying their truly scrumptious sushi offerings. Taki does an excellent job with both the size of their rolls (not too big, not too small) and the yummy sauces that accompany most rolls. Try the Spiderman Roll and the Mango roll. One spicy and loaded with goodies, the other is light, sweet and fresh- a perfect pairing!
Shogun has lots of dedicated fans here in the Macon area. The sushi is perfect with a great variety of rolls for any flavor combination you can imagine. My favorites are the mermaid roll, the tropical and the pretty woman.
4. Lemongrass thai bistro
Located in the heart of downtown Macon is a quaint little bistro that serves up an array of Sushi dishes. One of the most popular rolls on the menu is the Spicy Salmon Roll, this roll comes with seared wild-caught Alaskan salmon, scallions, cream cheese, avocado and sesame seeds. The also offer some of the best sushi deals in town, during Happy Hour (Tuesday-Friday 3pm-6pm) they offer $5 sushi!
5. thai pepper
A must try if you are in the Warner Robins area and are looking for something fresh and amazing. This restaurant has more than just sushi, but their sushi has put them on our map. One of the best rolls they have is the Thai Pepper Roll that includes: Tuna, bell peppers, Thai peppers, carrots, cucumber, basil, cilantro and topped with a masago and special blended sauce.
