The theme this weekend in Macon, Ga is Music, Art and getting ready for the Holidays!
Music: Go Hear It!
When it comes to live music this weekend Macon is once again living up to its reputation as having diverse in musical offerings. While technically not falling within the weekend, one of the biggest names in the music business is performing in Macon this Thursday night. The Beach Boys will take the stage at the Macon City Auditorium for their first ever performance in the heart of Georgia. These guys probably know more about music and live performances then the next 10 bands you'll see combined. With over 50 years of chart topping hits under their belt, The Beach Boys are sure to give a memorable performance to residents of Central Georgia. The Gatekeepers team had the chance to interview band member Bruce Johnston and if his openness and hospitality is any indication of the type of perform to expect, then concert goers are in for a real treat! You can hear the interview or the read the highlights of the interview with Bruce Here.
If Jazz is more your type of music, then be sure to catch the Mercer Jazz Ensemble as they perform a musical tribute to the genius of Herb Hancock this Friday night at Fickling Hall at the McCorkle Music Building. Do you realize how lucky we are in Macon to have the Townsend School of Music in our neighborhood? Each week local residents have the opportunity to hear some of the most talented young performers hone their craft for free in an absolutely gorgeous music facility. Even cities the size of Atlanta are hard pressed to have such readily accessible FREE LIVE MUSIC like we have thanks to Mercer. Oh yeah, did we mention this is a FREE performance!
If you like your music with a little historical twist check out the next Corner Concerts performance taking place this Saturday at the burned out Rialto Theater in downtown Macon. Corner Concerts is a new concept that brings live music to unusual places in and around Macon. The idea of making use of unused space to present concerts is something that is catching on in urban centers throughout the country and Corner Concerts is helping to bring Macon to the forefront of that movement. The first Corner Concert was a great success and with your help we can make the old Rialto Theatre location rock once again this Saturday!
Yet another Top Pick for live music is The Vespers who will performing at the 567 Center on Saturday night. For those who haven't heard The Vespers yet, they are a Southern folk pop family band from Nashville. The Vespers are one of those bands that have built an extensive underground following simply through word of mouth and heavy touring.
As always, the Gatekeepers have packed our Live Music Calendar with lots of other music choices for you to pick from this weekend. Our Live Music calendar offers everything you need to know before you go, band bios, venue details and live music samples and/or music videos and the best part is it’s completely mobile so while you are out and about our live music calendar is always at your finger tips.
Another option for your weekend entertainment is the Macon Has Talent dinner show taking place on Friday at the Moose Lodge. Yeah, its amateur hour for sure, but it was quirky enough for us to add it into our Top Picks and it has a good cause associated with it as well. 100% of the profits from this event will go towards buying/building an animal rescue center for Macon’s Purrs N Paws. So, you get some local entertainment and dinner all while benefiting a good cause, how bad can that be?
Arts: Go See It!
For the arts portion of this weekend theme of things to do, check out the Sidewalk Chalk Festival. This is your chance to be part of one of the largest public arts display in Macon as our local Parks & Rec department puts on a day of art, music and fun. You don’t have to be artistic to part of this festival just head out to Tattnall Square Park on Saturday from 9am to 3pm see some pretty talented people turn the sidewalks around the park into a beautiful work of art.
Also falling into the arts category and part of the First Friday events downtown is the opening reception of Autumn Returns exhibit at the Gallery at Macon Arts Alliance. This your chance to see some talented local artists and enjoy catering by Ocmulgee Traders. This is a free event that is sure to put you in a festive mood as the beauty of Autumn is celebrated.
Another First Friday event that is worth attending is the Open Make night at the new SparkMacon Makers Space. There has been a lot of buzz about SparkMacon and this is your chance to see what all the hype is about. The Makers Space is another unique concept that is being embraced by larger cities to unlock the potential for manufacturing and creative thinking. Once again Macon is not waiting to have this kind of creativity just trickle down I-75 from Atlanta, but we are taking a proactive approach to putting Macon on the map for Makers of all types to get behind this national movement. So get out there and Make something this Friday night!
