Nine years ago this week, crew members packed up Harpo Studios in Chicago, and headed off on an 800-mile road trip that ended right here in Macon.
When Winfrey considered filming her "My Favorite Things" segment, Macon was the first choice because her television ratings in Macon are higher than anywhere else in the United States.
Winfrey said "Of all the people in the United States this is the number one city for people watching the Oprah show. What most people do is they go where their numbers aren't good but I say lets applaud the people that applauded you. ... Take care of your friends first."
Once in Macon, Winfrey's first stop was the Fish 'N Pig on Lake Tobesofkee. After considering the menu, Oprah orders the fried alligator and the front-page headline in the next day's Macon Telegraph is one of her favorites ever—"Oprah Lands in Macon, Dines at Fish 'N Pig."
While in Macon, Oprah stayed in the Overlook Room at the historic 1842 Inn on College Street. On her second day in Macon, Oprah surfaced from the 1842 and set out for a little holiday shopping in downtown Macon that included a trip to Ginger Michelle boutique on First Street.
After a morning of shopping, Winfrey and her entourage next stopped in at H&H Restaurant to meet Mama Louise Hudson and Mama Inez Hill. Hundreds of people waited in front of the restaurant for a couple of hours in anticipation of Winfrey's arrival. After a trip to Karla's Shoe Boutique at the corner of Second Street and Cherry Street, Winfrey headed over to Nu-Way Weiners and the Tubman Museum.
After Winfrey's whirlwind tour of Macon, she embarked on the Macon City Auditorium where she surprised an audience of nearly 300 people by unveiling her 2007 list of “Oprah’s Favorite Things" and showered the crowd with presents ranging from refrigerators to camcorders to wrapping paper.
“The Oprah Winfrey Show: Oprah’s Favorite Things 2007” premiered Tuesday, November 20, 2007.
