Old Grey Whistle Test and The 1976 Capricorn Picnic
For today's vintage vault video we bring you an amazing episode of the BBC's Grey Whistle Test, Britain's once highly popular music show. This 1976 video includes Bob Harris as he travels to Macon, Georgia, in search of the "open-air party called the Capricorn Picnic, that was held annually by Phil Walden of Capricorn Records. This video features many Southern rock bands and performers, including Wet Willie, Marshall Tucker Band, Dickey Betts, Bonnie Bramlett, Chuck Leavell & Sea Level and Stillwater.
While the video is almost an hour long, we wanted you to check out the video at the 23:00 mark, with a short interview with Harris and Walden walking around the Poplar and Broadway section of downtown Macon that leads into footage of Capricorn's Summer Picnic at Lakeside Park.
Throughout the early 1970s, Southern rock bands helped mainstream Southern culture as well as paving the way for the Carter presidency. At the 26:00 video mark, Harris speaks with one-time governor of Georgia and future president Jimmy Carter while he was in attendance at the '76 Capricorn Picnic at Lakeside.
