Here are the Gatekeeper's Top Picks for this weekend in Macon
It will be a busy weekend loaded with diverse, interesting, entertaining and fun things to do in Macon, Ga. This weekend’s theme is diversity, as in Macon is comprised of a diverse population and that can be easily evidenced in the unique list of things happening in around town.
First up is Bill Maher live at The Macon City Auditorium. The diversity theme here is Ron White played the same stage in Macon just two weeks ago. You can bet your last dollar the audience composition will be totally difference for the Bill Maher show. Just another thing to love about Macon's entertainment scene. Here is a fun read about the Ron White experience.
Just a few blocks away The Heartbreak Hotel will be in business at the Grand opera house. The Civic Club of Macon always puts on a great show and this year’s charity performance promises to be another great local effort to make our city a better place to live, work and play. They call this annual event "The Miracle on Mulberry" and after seeing all the hard work and effort that volunteers out into this year's performance you will agree miracles are possible.
Back to our Diversity theme, The First Friday African American Heritage Tour takes place downtown on Friday. This tour will be highlighting what places like the Grand Opera House and other iconic locations like The City Auditorium meant to the black community back in the day.
There will be an abundance of diversity on the big screens around town this weekend as well. On the one hand there is the lighthearted animated hijinks of Sponge Bob Square Pants as he makes his film debut during a special screening presented by the Macon Film Festival.
And on the other side of town there will be a screening of the new James Brown bio-pic featuring the Godfather of Soul, entitled “Get on Up”. This film presentation has an added bonus of being shown at the Douglas Theatre were many music legends performed live. Two movie events that could not be more different in just about every aspect for local movie goers.
Rounding out theme for the weekend, Macon always has a diverse music scene on tap for music lovers. Consider catching both of these musical performances in one weekend; Charlie and the Foxtrots a “poppy mix of country/folk music will be rocking the Hummingbird.
While across town on Mercer’s campus The Mercer Wind Ensemble will be presenting a classical performance titled Mad about Chamber Music II. You have to travel to much larger cities to find the type of musical diversity Macon exhibits almost every weekend!
You have to admit, not only does Macon have a lot going on this weekend, but the audience, performances and subject matter could not be more interesting, entertaining and of course more diverse then can be found anywhere else.
