5 Ways To Avoid Black Friday

The solidarity of Thanksgiving is so yesterday. Black Friday can inspire some of the most unexpected in Americans.

Black Friday (the precipice of the chaotic holiday shopping season) is not a day for window shopping, it's a hardcore shopping experience.  So if the thought of getting up at 1am in the morning is devastating, try these 5 alternatives and enjoy the holiday shopping season.

1.  Porch Time

It’s finally not HOT, so take this opportunity to partake in the southern tradition of porch time!  Take a cue from Robert Fisher, Magnolia Street's Unoffical King of Porch Time and skip the crowds, and invite friends and family over for some mosquito free outdoor quality time.  So make some turkey sandwiches, talk with your loved ones, and plan your online strategy for Cyber-Monday.

2.  Shop at Museum Gift Shops

Museums are a local best kept shopping secret!  Most are open on black Friday and you can find some truly unique gifts for the holiday season, and avoid the craziness of black Friday madness.  Museums are family friendly so bring the entire family for a day of unique educational fun and shopping.  Also, here is a mini-museum gift shop top 5 list:  Museum of Aviation, Museum of Arts & Sciences, Cannonball House, Tubman Museum, Sidney Lanier Cottage, Big House Museum and The Otis Redding Foundation.

3.  Create your own local foodie tour

After the Super Bowl of cooking, otherwise known as Thanksgiving, catering another family meal is probably not at the top of your to-do list.  Why not plan a day to check out those local restaurants you have been meaning to try.  Explore some of Gateway’s top 5 food lists, and create your own foodie tour of local cuisine.  It is a great way to avoid the kitchen for just a day, and taste the great eateries that Macon has to offer.

4.  Go to the Gym

Get a jump start on nearly everyone’s New Year’s resolution and go to the gym.  It will most likely be a ghost town, and you’ll have free reign over all the machines.  Plus!  If you start working toward your fitness goals on black Friday, there is a strong possibility that you’ll already see great results before the New Year arrives.

5.  Decorate for Christmas

It is officially acceptable to allow your inner elf to escape!  Play some Christmas carols, pull out all the decorations, and get busy creating holiday magic.  If real trees are one of your favorite things, then black Friday is a great day to visit a Christmas Tree farm.  You’ll have your pick of the best trees available, and avoid fighting crowds near major shopping areas.
