Your weekend list of things to do for October 17 thru 19

Finally the weather is starting to act like Fall and not an Indian Summer. With the cool weather there a lot of cool things to do this weekend in and around Macon, Ga. As always, our Gatekeeper Top Picks for things to do is not just another long list of “everything” that can be jammed into a calendar. We take a great amount of effort to review each event in our Top Picks and try to find the unique, interesting, unusual activities going on around town. Yes, we do recommend events that happen outside of Macon, but we like to keep our focus on Central Georgia. The following is a highlight of we think are the events you should serious consider attending this weekend.

Weekend of October 17th

Spirits in October “Tales of the Notable & Notorious” is taking place at Riverside Cemetery. This guided tour puts a unique spin on the historical characters buried in Riverside cemetery by using actors in period costume to bring the story of the dead to life. A little creepy, but overall a pretty cool way to spend your Friday evening.

One of our favorite festivals takes place this weekend, it’s the Greek Festival happening October 17 thru 19. Hosted by the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church this may not be the biggest festival in town, but sure is the tastiest festival around. If you love good homemade Greek food then you need to be at 859 First Street in downtown Macon this weekend. Along with all the Greek delicacies there are vendors selling arts and crafts, a chance to tour the historic church and some pretty interesting local entertainment.  This festival may lack the drama of bigger festivals, but it is the homey touches that make it fun to attend.

When it comes to music this weekend, Macon never disappoints with the varied options being offered. Of course there is a lot of country music and southern rock on tap, but this weekend one of the biggest Pop Rockers of all-time hits the Coliseum stage. Alice Cooper is in town and just in time to celebrate the Halloween season. Many of the concert goers will be in costume which gives you the chance to get more use out of all the effort you put into that Halloween costume. Alice Cooper maybe old school, but he still knows how to put on one hell of a good show!

If your music tastes range a little more modern and you don’t mind a short drive then Head to Milledgeville for the Deep Roots Festival this Saturday. Being a college town you can bet Milledgeville will be rocking during Deep Roots festival. The overall lineup of music acts looks good, but the must be see band is by far The Heartless Bastards! Just one listen to their music and you are hooked.

Another longtime running festival takes place this weekend in Perry Ga. It’s the 66th annual Mossy Creek Barnyard Festival. If you can pull off a festival 66 years in a row you must be doing something right and Mossy Creek knows how to throw an old fashioned Barnyard goodtime. This festival is a trip back in time as the whole family gets to see how things used to get done from basket weaving (Happens to be what my college degree was in) and wood carving to some homemade ‘southern vittles’. Mossy Creek is the granddaddy of southern arts, crafts and old school living festivals.

If you are under 40 and want some entertainment that does not include barnyard animals and ancient rockers then head to Haunted Bass Costume Party presented by Cherry Street Ink and being held at Element Night Club this Saturday night. There will be live Bass music, a costume contest and lots of free stuff given away this year.

If you only get to attend one Mercer Bear’s Football Game this year we suggest going to the game this Saturday. It’s a Blackout at Mercer Stadium with all the Bear’s fan being asked to wear all black to support the team. There's nothing like seeing 10,000 raging Bear’s fans all dressed in black to get you in the mood for some college football. It also happens to be a tough game for Mercer as the go up against the conference leaders Western Carolina, so our home town team could really use your support

That should be enough activities to keep you plenty busy this weekend. If you need more options then check out our Gatekeeper Top Picks  and be sure to visit our Live Music Calendar . If you need some ideas on where to dine this weekend then go to our Eat & Drink section to find a detailed list of places to eat and drink  as well as a lot of restaurant reviews written by our Gatekeepers  .

Get out and enjoy all the fun things to do in and around Macon, Ga. This weekend!
