Cox Capitol Theatre
Downtown Macon, Georgia’s most versatile theater first opened as an elegant movie house in 1916. Years later, the Capitol was touted as the city’s first air-conditioned theater, but as multiplexes drew audiences into the suburbs, it closed in 1976.
Restoration began in 2003 and three years later, the entertainment showplace reopened as the Cox Capitol Theatre with the same elegant atmosphere, plus a fully functioning kitchen and bar, with tables, chairs and cozy seating for any set up. It hosts two major annual events: the Macon Film Festival and Bragg Jam music and arts festival.
Year-round live music, movies, meetings, and even weddings are the norm for what has become a cornerstone in the revitalization effort of downtown Macon.
